We wish one and all a very merry christmas and a happy new year from all at Minto Student House – Brisbane.
The christmas tree is still up and the solar fairy lights are along the top of the hedge out the front of the fence we errected for sound proofing a little while ago. The christmas wreath is on the front door. We were open this christmas and are for new year break. Last year we closed for maintence. The day went over well with nibblies for everyone and bing crosby festive songs.
We have had some severe tropical thunder storms and torrential rain. I had to dig a temporary drain to stop our rain water going into the neighbors property.
There is a happy xmas spirit at Minto as guests go home and others arrive to spend time with loved ones in Brisbane.
Thanks to all our customers who have supported us to help create another successful and productive year for minto student house www.mintostudenthouse.com and Minto Beach House – Golden Beach www.mintobeachouse.com.

Dance your way up the street as Rio Rhythmics lead the way to the Kurilpa Country Stage in a moving drumming, dancing celebration of South American and Capoeira styles, culminating in an on-stage performance.
Stay around for more eclectic entertainment by über-talented performers from across the arts spectrum; from a circus cabaret set from Vulcana Women’s Circus, to Indigenous contemporary performance, to the West End State School Greek Dancers.
Get acquainted with the personalities who make this suburb so special at Boundary St Speak Out; intimate storytelling sessions at coffee shops and other local venues.
If it’s happening on Sunday 19 September, it’s happening in West End. There’s food, fashion, BMX trick riding, art, acrobatics, dance, design, markets, music, photography, poetry, performance, stalls, sculpture, conversation, coffee, community gardens, and much more. Parking is limited but luckily you can take an easy walk there from Minto.
Walk down to QPAC Playhouse on the cnr Melbourne and Grey Street, South Brisbane (about 20mins walk) and take in the Brisbane festival atmosphere on the way. For some of the best dancing you will ever see in the Australian premier of Danza Contemporánea de Cuba (DCC). It has been recognised as one of the world’s most groundbreaking modern dance companies for more than half a decade.
Renowned for its dancers’ fluidity, fire and sheer physical artistry, the company has devised a new language of dance
that has been described as a pungent blend of Afro-Caribbean expression, classical European ballet and American modernism.
Now it’s Brisbane’s turn to experience the passion and revolutionary brilliance of Danza Contemporánea de Cuba, through two ninety-minute programmes, each featuring three dance works.
From the 14th to 18th september. Book your tickets and your stay at Minto before its too late.
On the 23rd at qpac is an awesome action packed display set the action in the Chinatown of a futuristic Australian city and bring in multi-media landscapes, acrobatics, parkour, trampoline, dance, circus and martial arts, and you might have something close to the on-stage spectacle of Stalker’s Shanghai Lady Killer.

Last but not least check out our promo video at www.vimeo.com/10960462 its a good idea to push pause and go and do something else while you wait for it to load (should take about 5 mins). Any ideas from you readers on how to fix this problem would be appreciated.
Until next time
enjoying the festivities
The Minto Team..
A studenthouse guest has just come back from the mintobeachhouse at golden beach our other house for short holiday rentals. He needed a rest from all his job hunting in brisbane so golden beach was perfect 3 day chill for him to mull over his options.
*our favorite relieving managers from paradise cove (http://www.paradisecoveresort.net/) in vanuatu, callie and marchello, had a spell on the managing team while nathan had a break in argentina
*don has begun working in real estate as buyers agent.
*the house is in fine shape maintence is up to date and we are enjoying movie nights lately with dvd playing on the big flat screen in the common living room.
this room has proven to be quite effecient to warm up this winter simply by closing the room off from the back verandah and using portable heater.it really does become cosy almost like the fireplace is burning.
unfortunately for several government regulatory reasons and we are prevented from burning logs. The ceiling insulation recently installed is working well.
Unfortunately the crop has been ravaged this time by the neighbors chooks from 4 doors up.he is in the habit of letting them free range.i have asked nicely once so far for him to keep them confined to his own backyard.it is disapointing for nathan because he genuinly tries to get things going.buying heirloom seed varieties and keeping worms mulching etc.
the chooks are a dang pest.the garden was recovering from our local scrub turkeys.i didnt have a problem with them because i figured they are protectected and they have been nesting around here probably for thousands of years before we got here.nathan would prefer the turkeys left his garden alone as well.
we replaced 2 lilipiillis in the front hedge formation that were not performing.the front hedge is starting to shape up and we have already noticed a marked decrease in noise from the road. We planted mock oranges between the lillipilis to thicken the foliage up a bit as well.
It is nice not to be cutting grass all the time in winter and the elm tree near the rainwater tank is deciduous so the blanket of shed leaves is nice little reminder in the garden another season is here and time is passing.
Minto student house goes green.
With accommodation businesses being a major consumer and contributor to landfill Minto has decided to take some responsibility. Over the past year we have been working on different ways to make Minto green. One of the big bonuses to you guys is that we now have our very own herb and vegetable garden. Come and pick your own herbs and vegetables while you stay at Minto. Totally free of charge (and chemicals)
We have installed 3 large rainwater tanks and we are currently looking into solar power. One focus is on reducing the landfill so we have implemented a reuse -recycle mentality where all food scraps are used to create compost for the garden and rubbish is sorted before being disposed of. We enjoy doing what we can to lessen our impact on this beautiful world and our little bit of it called Brisbane. Our long term goal in relation to this is to be eco certified by ecotourism australia.
Other recent improvements involve a tall fence built all round for security and noise reduction. Some nice foliage has been planted on the front fence line which has proved to be a nicer outlook as well as improved noise reduction from the road.
